Community Quilts
Making Community Quilts is a major activity within WAQA every year. Some members make complete quilts in various sizes as required, while others make just the quilt tops which are then sandwiched and quilted by different members at Community Quilt Sewing Days. The majority of the Quilts are donated to patients of King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH), Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH), oncology and haematology patients at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) and the Royal Flying Doctor Service amongst others. Contact Us if you would like to be involved at communityquilts@waquilters.org.au

Guidelines
There are preferred requirements for some of our Community Quilt beneficiaries. If you would like to ensure your quilt is donated to one of these organisations, please follow these guidelines. Patients (or their carers) choose their own quilts which is a lovely aspect of the giving process, forging an intangible link between you, the quilter, and the patient. Many quilters add their quilt label and we receive many, many beautiful cards, notes and letters of thanks.
KEMH Humidicrib Covers
Humidicrib covers are to be 16 inches wide by 24 inches long. They can be made from any fabric; cotton, cotton/poly blend or flannelette with a batting layer (this gives them a bit of weight to stay in place on top of the cribs). The backing of the quilt must be a light pastel colour (plain beige / white calico is fine) to prevent incorrect colouring reflected onto the babies. The front of the quilt can be any colour or design.
PMH Quilts
These quilts can be any size up to single bed size (no larger). The smaller quilts can lay on top of a bed or cot and the larger ones can be tucked in. Quilts are given to small children and teenagers – the little children love bright colours, I-Spy, animals and the teenagers choose modern designs (especially in WA footy colours for the boys!)
SCGH Quilts
These quilts can be large lap-sized up to single bed size (no larger). Both women and men love to receive and treasure a quilt through their extensive treatment process.
RFDS Quilts
These quilts should measure 40" x 40" for adults, 36" by 36" for children and 24" by 24" for newborns. The cots and beds used on the plane are very small and these sizes fit correctly and safely.
The best batting to use is 100% cotton.
Feely Hearts and Teddies
These are given to patients' family members – children love to have these to hold and pop into a pocket; keep them small for little hands. Make them from any fabric with a good feel to it eg polar fleece, chenille, soft terry cloth, panne velvet, satin, silk. Fill them lightly with toy filling as they need to be pliable in the hand. Please do not add any embellishments. Patterns for a heart and teddy are here. (You will need Acrobat Reader to open the pattern).
