At our May business meeting ...
Our guest speaker was Jody Pearl -
textile/fashion artist - who reconfigures old clothing into one-off designer
pieces.
At age 11, slicing into her brand new
jeans to insert colourful triangles (cut from one of her best skirts) seemed
a good idea to Jody. Even though it got her into serious trouble with
her mother, it was the start of what was to become a life long passion for,
shall we call it, 'textile re-engineering'.
Jody
inserts sleeves as skirt panels, uses collars as edging at the bottom of
shirts and whips off sleeves, fastenings and ribbings to make shawls from
jumpers! Jody combines garment pieces very cleverly but it is perhaps
her creative mixing of colours that seems to ensure that all the pieces look
like they belong together.
Jody says she rarely spends more than two
hours on a re-engineered garment. If it is proving just too difficult
it often just gets tossed back in the pile to await another opportunity more
suited to it. And there is plenty in Jody's 'stash' to work with ...
she is in the 'Op' shops every other day looking for pieces that are just
waiting for her to collect, file and eventually give new life to.
Which is perhaps just as well, as numerous WAQA members would have been
quite happy to wander off with their particular favourite pieces it seemed!
Have a look at Jody's work at her
website.
A note from Carol Littlefair, Curator, York Residency Museum
'Four Women's Stories'
and 'The Dempster Quilt'
There is an exciting new
exhibition at the York Museum that explores what life in the bush was REALLY
like for women from 1870 to the present day.
The lives and times of
four women from different eras and backgrounds are told using their own
words, in the eye-opening ‘Four Women’s Stories’ recently opened at the York
Residency Museum. This exhibition really gives an unusual insight into the
home, leisure time and personal lives of four very different women who were
and are part of the fabric of York.
If you are planning any
events or outings I would like to suggest a special visit at a mutually
convenient date and time – you don’t have to be restricted to the Museum’s
opening hours as we open by arrangement for groups of 10+. The Dempster
Quilt will be on show only until the end of April but ‘Four Women’s
Stories’ will be on show throughout 2008.
The Museum is open
from 1-3pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and 11am-3.30pm at
weekends. Other attractions in York can be found through the York Visitor
Centre tel 9641 1301 or
www.yorkwa.org
We have toilets,
refreshment facilities, plenty of parking space for cars and coaches. If you
would like to discuss a visit please do contact me. I am at the Museum on
Wednesdays and Thursdays [9641 1751]. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Carol Littlefair

Want to join a quilting group or start a
quilting group?
Although WAQA is unable to keep track of all quilting groups in and around
Perth, as a service to members, we do have a Groups Coordinator whose role
it is to place quilters with a suitable group of quilters in your area.
Sometimes the best idea is to get together
with a number of new quilters and start your own group. Either way,
contact
Eleanor Shapiro, Small Groups Coordinator and she will assist you.
(Please note, this is a service provided for members only).
Advertising in the Quilters' Quarterly

the Editor (via the Webmaster links on the website) to avoid disappointment.

August and November.
